- Craft sealant
- Pencil
- Paint brushes
Top Tips
You need to prepare your clay pots for painting before you can start this craft.
If they have a sticker tag on them, you need to clean the surface after soaking the pot in warm water to ensure that the sticky residue is removed before painting. The same goes for any dirt that might be on the pot.
If you need to clean your pot before painting, make sure you give it enough time to dry. It can take hours for terracotta to completely dry because of how quickly it absorbs water.
To achieve great, vibrant colors on your terracotta ghost pots, you might need to apply a base coat or multiple coats of paint, depending on the paint you’re using. After drying, treat them with a craft sealant.
Although Modge Podge is a terrific technique to seal your final pots, if you intend to use them outside, you might want to cover them with a clear water-based spray acrylic.
How To Make Terracotta Ghost Pots
- Paint your pot entirely white and allow it to dry completely.
- Draw on the eyes and open mouth with a pencil before painting them straight on so you don’t make any mistakes.
- Paint in the drawn eyes and mouth with black paint. Allow the paint to dry completely.
- Add a coat of craft sealant to your finished pot and allow it to dry completely.
